So... what about gender segregation?

Share your thoughts & ideas or questions you have about the topic we discussed on seperating the middle grades by gender. What do you think -
Would it be better? How so?
Would students have less behavior issues? Why or Why not?
Would the teacher be more fair?
Would your grades be better?
What would change if your school did this?

  2. I think that gender segregation is not a good idea because you need to learn how to work with different genders. I also agree with Gillie that it would have a big impact socially because I have friends that are boys. Even though the article states that a school in Florida's grades have improved, that's only one school and I have noticed girls talk more with girls and the other way around, so that would be very distracting. If my class did that, I think the girls would benefit more since girls usually work better in their own gender.

  3. I think that gender segregation would be better academically because of the proof in the article. I do think that you need more proof also. We can't base it of one school. Though I think this I don't think that we should have gender segregation because it would have a big impact socially for many reasons.a) Because some girls have friends that are boys and the other way around.b) Some girls are act more like boys and some boys act more like girls.I do not think that gender segregation will not change the teachers and make them be more fair. I think the students behavior would change a lot because of the different environment. I do think the whole school will change in the same way.

  4. I think gender segregation would improve grades and would work better academically because grades increased for one gender segregated school. However, I don't think that you should base a big decision on one school. I don't think gender segregation is right though. It would have a big impact on some people socially and academically. I and many other of my friends that are my same gender have many friends that are girls. I also believe that since boys and girls work differently, it is actually a great opportunity to have girls work with boys so that both sides could be exposed to new ways of learning. Some girls could work better being in a group with boys that learn well by actively doing things or the other way around. If anyone would get better benefits out of gender segregation it would be the teachers. It depends on the teachers and their experience, although it is possible that it would make the teachers more fair because they are only working with one gender. I think the environment would probably have a big impact on the students behavior. The whole school will change in the same way and I'm not sure if it will be an improvement or not.

I think gender segregation wouldn't work because if you have a best friend, of a different gender, you may be thinking about them and be sad. You may not get good grades because you're so sad. You will be so focused on your friend you forget about grades.
When you get a job you will have to work with a different gender. You will be so used to your gender you may not be used to the opposite gender. If you go to a segregated school when you get a job you will have trouble communicating with the opposite gender.

  6. I think gender segregation is good and bad. I think gender segregation is not a good idea because when you get a job you will need experience working with the other gender. I think gender segregation would also be good academically because in the article it says that 57% of the girls in a co-ed school pass the state test and 37% of the boys in a co-ed school pass the state test. In a gender segregated school 75% of the girls and 86% of the boys pass the state test. But, that is just one school in Florida. In the article it also says that boys learn differently than girls but some girls may learn the same way as boys and some boys may learn the same as girls.

  7. Wow - some really thouhtful ideas! I like the fact that many of you mentioned it would be a good idea to get some more facts first before making a decision. If we studied more schools that have tried this gender segregation model, it would allow us to see what the data and results might show and would give us a more educated opinion. What about the teachers - do you think it would be easier for them?

  8. I think it would and wouldn't work. I think it would work because when they were in co-ed only 57% girls passed and 37% boys passed the state test. But when they were segregated the girls went up 75% and the boys went up 86%. I think it won't work because, girls and boys learn differently, but some girls learn like boys, and some boys learn like girls. Sometimes boys play aggressively but when there's a girl they learn from the girl. And when it's all girls it gets kind of boring but when there's a boy they make things kind of fun. When they get a job they would have to learn with the opposite gender.
